A Welsh-Language Edition for Cyborg.Cymru

Art of FACELESS has published a fully bilingual edition of Cyborg.Cymru, a new site in the Chronicles of The Hollow Circuit® catalogue.

The site launches in English and Welsh. Both editions are complete: navigation, headings, body copy, character file, section furniture and captions are all present in both languages, switchable from a single control in the header. Neither language is a summary or a partial translation of the other.

Why a full edition, not a toggle

Bilingual publishing is often handled as a landing page in one language and everything else in another. We have taken the other approach. The Welsh edition carries the same six sections as the English — the character file, the release, the full lyric transmission, the unmasking, the signal archive and the comic panels — because a reader arriving in Welsh should not be reading a reduced version of the work.

This applies to the parts that are hardest to move between languages. The lyric text on the site is structured as an exchange between a human voice and a machine voice, with the register shifting line by line. That structure had to survive translation intact rather than being flattened into plain prose.

The material itself is bilingual

The subject is set in an alternate Cardiff. The source lyric already switches between Welsh and English mid-line and quotes Yma o Hyd. A monolingual publication would have lost information that is in the work, not decoration added to it.

Format

The site is a standalone publication rather than an entry on an existing blog: single-page, section-indexed, with embedded audio from the SoundCloud catalogue and a full comic page presented at reading size. It sits in the Chronicles of The Hollow Circuit® catalogue alongside the other properties in that world.
